I never read the books, and there are only three I believe, and so if the show is renewed for a second season, it must take some different path because there won't be much left to borrow from the books depending how the first season goes. Considering Rebecca Serle is also a part of the writing team, I have faith that Marlene won't ruin her books. That being said, they might change things here and there to keep the readers of the books intrigued as they watch the show.
I read the first few chapters of FIL recently and I honestly say that I've read Fanficition that with more sophisticated and mature writing styles.
Marlene, however, will probably give it justice. However, considering Rebecca Serle is a writer on the show and the PLL author (I forgot her name) was never really part of the TV show team, I am a little nervous.
I hope this show was on a more better cable like FX or HBO or Netflix even. It would have allowed them to go really dark and explore the darker sides of hollywood such as privacy, hacking, paparazzi, etc. I couldn't get really read the book after the first few chapters because I just found it very poorly written, sugar coated as fuck, excuse my language. I just hope the show will explore the fact that it is not all rainbows and sunshines and that it will show the struggles of being an actor, and touch on important topics that will get conversations started like Feud and 13 reasons why(ik different show, but still very well done) and not just drown us into another fantasy land.
Preach! I really hope it isn't just some okay-they're-actors-and-its-Hollywood remake of Twilight.
I really hope they also explore their dark sides - like Paige struggling to balance her new famous life and her old normal one and acting out/emotionally struggling or explore new topics like drug use and grief and/or something really dark. I mean, last thing I want to see is this poor famous rich girl who can't decide who she likes more.
Ultimately, I think they have already planted enough seeds for a season 2 and beyond. We have Jordan's past, Tangey's controlling mom, Rainer's sobriety(and the struggle that comes with it), how fame can change a person, loosing a sense of who you are, hitting rock bottom (Alexis), etc. I think Freeform will allow them to go as dark as their legally possible. I don't want something cheesy or Degrassi-like. But we're already seeing the dark side of fame being explored.
Honestly, I'm surprised how much they packed into the 10 episoes without feeling stuffed. I'm also glad Tom Madden found a job and like his character's relationship with Cassie and sorta friendship with Paige. Now that I think about it though, wether on purpose or by accident... it works better that the first season is more bright and romantic, as opposed to dark, twisty and full of mystery. As dicussed before, the finale hinted a shift in tone for a second season. But the first 10 episodes were like we were Paige. Becoming famous almost over night can seem great and happy for a bit. But as we saw, with each episode, there's certainly a price to pay for fame. You give up your privacy, even your own life. Which results in friends that were once thick as thieves drifting apart and in the process feeling like you have lost a sense of who you are before it all.
Also, we saw Paige's friendships with Cassie and Jake become strained. Cassie is jealous of her and can't stop being envious, something that is hard to approach and ultimately fixing that is not easy. Jake, after waiting for so long, decided he doesn't want to be Paige's friend anymore, since he's in love with her.
If Paige does pick him at the press conference, she will be unhappy become she knows she's leading him on despite she likes Rainer more. Rainer himself will be pained to see her with another guy. And Paige will be stuck in a relationship, not knowing how to break with with Jake without breaking his heart and whatever friendliness they have.
If Paige picks Rainer, Jake will back to Austin as there's nothing in L.A. for him. Paige herself will be heartbroken as she wants him to be with his side.
Like the flashforward revealed a quite sad and tired Paige. So she probably will be alone for a while due to her actions. Idk about who she'll pick... But I could see either her not picking anyone just yet. Or be forced by Nina butting in to salvage the film (by saying that Rainer and Paige are in fact dating) and escorting Jake out. or Paige picking Jake but in the course of that, her friendship with Rainer becoming strained.
I honestly didn't mind reading the books. Sure the writing was pretty shallow and not as deep as other books, but I'm guessing she was just targeting her audience. That or it was just her first book(not 100% sure if it was) and her writing will improve with time. I do agree they have a lot material to use for a season 2, but whether or not it'll get a season 2 is a bit iffy. Majority of people refuse to watch it because of Bella(which is understandable) and I'm ngl, I was one of those. But as I watched it, I actually liked it and not for Bella. So I'm just sure if it'll get the ratings it needs for it to be renewed but the way Freeform has been with generously renewing shows(which is something ABC Family never did), there still might be a chance it could get renewed.

Honestly, Jordan's past is my least favorite part of the storyline. Idk why. Maybe because it has been done so many times, maybe because it seems too far fetched, the fact that paparazzi is so very interested in Paige and shows up even at her college and yet doesn't follow Jordan when he goes to meet his mom in Episode 3. Plus the whole poor boy storyline has been done so many times on TV, it fails to interest me.

Personally, I loved it. It shows not everyone comes from a privilage background like most of the other characters, so I'm here for it.
Jordan is my least favorite character tbh and his relationship with Nina has been done before. I don't care for it. As for why paparazzis aren't following Jordan... well, it seems like paige is the hot new thing, it makes sense why they are everywhere. Whereas Rainer has been given them a lot to talk about lately.
I see mor with Drew XD. In other news...So since FIL premiered I made sure follow most of the FIL cast that a social media account (this case instagram) except for Bella (nothing against, but I don't really care for what she posts).. One was a IG video of the casts' live tweet session, I cracked up cause Charlie was the only one drinking orange juice, whereas everyone else was enjoying some alcohol.
